Ok, so I'll fess up now - I don't quite look like this when I am working from home 🙄 (more like Ugg boots and thermals today than cute heels and coiffed hair!)... but, I'm pretty sure that back pain and achy hands also affect the stylish desk or mobile worker
Here are 3 things that I have found help with these symptoms;
Posture - I've been focusing on strengthening to improve my posture as I have a tendency to hunch my shoulders, not just at my desk but also generally. I've found when I sit straighter with my shoulders back, not only does it ease aches but it also encourages me to breathe better which also can improve focus. A side benefit is that better posture = flatter tummy which is also a motivating factor for me.
Time Management - Tim Ferris the author behind 'The 4 Hour Workweek' argues that we all have enough time, we just don't manage it effectively "Since we have eight hours to fill, we fill eight hours. If we had 15, we would fill 15". This resonates so much with me as someone who thrives on deadlines - uni and work assignments seem so much easier for me when I am under a bit of pressure (bit being the keyword here!). I've just started using Trello to help get more focused on what I need to do each day and this has also helped take the overwhelm out of some days and ensure I also bring in time for self-care and what I love.
Essential Oils - I honestly can't imagine what I did without essential oils now. I am constantly turning to them as part of my daily routine to support my energy, focus, mood and general wellbeing. Some of the oils that have been amazing for achy shoulders, lower back and fingers/ hands though have been these 3 for me:
Ice Blue Rub (also called Deep Blue Rub) - this is the soothing athletic blend. I have to confess it wasn't my favourite oil when I started as it reminded me of Voltaren/ Deep Heat rather than some of the other oils that make the house smell pretty. I am a big convert now those as this stuff really works. I apply some to my shoulders, lower back and hands during the day and it gives immediate relief. I also use it after a day working in the garden.
Copaiba - originating from the resin of the Copaiba tree native to tropical South America this oil has a direct effect on the Endocannabinoid System. Endocannabinoids and their receptors are found throughout the body: in the brain, organs, connective tissues, glands, and immune cells. This system is like a bridge between body and mind. I apply Copaiba with the Ice Blue rub as it can act as a 'magnifier' to enhance its benefits. It may also help support nerve pain, inflammation and anxious feelings and has now become a key part of my proactive daily wellness routine.
Peppermint - so many uses that I keep a bottle on my desk! Peppermint oil is great to open up the airways and help increase focus. I add 1-2 drops in the palm of my hand, rub together and then cup over my nose and take 4 deep breaths in. I then rub the remaining oil on my hands over my shoulders and lower back as it can also help reduce muscle tension. Doing this several times a day helps me tremendously. It’s also a great one to take in the car on long journeys to help with driver fatigue and aches
